Lornie Bullerwell '69 and Christine DePalma '04, '09 Share Why They Give Back

“The university played such a pivotal role in forming the foundation of my life that it would be like abandoning my family to choose not to be a part of the UMass Boston community.”

—Lornie Bullerwell ’69, Biology

For me, it’s easy to stay engaged with UMass Boston, because its students and faculty are so similar to the people I met while I was a student at the university’s Park Square campus in the 1960s. Now, as an alumnus, I want to help further the dreams of UMass Boston’s students in whatever ways I can—one reason why I cherish my interactions with today’s students at career and alumni events.

The $100 tuition bill per semester I paid back in 1964 was my ticket to success. UMass Boston introduced me to the world of biology, strengthened my study and research skills through its Upward Bound Program, and inspired me to pursue what has been a rewarding career as an educator.

I believe it is vital that we all do our utmost to keep the university affordable and accessible. Toward that end, I established a scholarship to help ensure that current UMass Boston students have the same opportunities I did.

Seeing my name on the Campus Center donor wall is a reminder to me of what I achieved and gained at UMass Boston. I hope it is also an inspiration to today’s students to do what is necessary to attain their goals in and outside the classroom.

Remember: Your gift, whatever its size, will help deserving students reach their academic and career objectives.

"I want to support the next generation of UMass Boston alumni, so giving back to the university is important to me.”

—Christine DePalma ’04, ’09

Few people have my vantage point on either the campus improvements taking place at UMass Boston or the vision of its future held by university administrators and others. As assistant campus planner, I see the impact of alumni engagement and giving every day, blueprint by blueprint, brick by brick.

When I was a UMass Boston undergraduate— the first in my family to attend college—the university became my home of sorts, providing me with opportunities that prepared me to be a critical thinker, a decision maker, and a collaborator. Today, I use these skills in the field of institutional planning, helping the university realize its long-term goals.

Last April, I served on a career panel for UMass Boston’s Student Philanthropy Council, the university’s first- ever student giving program. I was impressed with the generosity of our students and their desire to build connections with alumni like you and me.

Giving is a great way to provide support that will allow UMass Boston to flourish in the near and long term. So please join me and make a gift today. Doing so will help you develop a connection with the UMass Boston community that lasts a lifetime.

Your role in the UMass Boston community remains important after you graduate. Meet alumni Lornie and Christine. See how their decision to give both enriches their lives and provides opportunity for today’s students. Join them by making your gift today.
