Advancing Women's Leadership

Planning commences for CWPPP's 20th anniversary

Ann Bookman, the new director of CWPPP,  shared her vision for the Center at a public reception welcoming her. As the Center prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary this year, Bookman said she would like to see women "redesign the public square, reformulate public discourse, and revitalize the process of civic participation."

Karen Charles Peterson launches bid for 5th Suffolk District

Karen Charles Peterson

Alumna of the Women in Politics and Public Policy graduate certificate program, Karen Charles Peterson ('97) is now running for the 5th Suffolk seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. She began her career in public service as an aide to then City Councilor Bruce Bolling and went on to Boston Public Television's public affairs show, Greater Boston. Peterson then served as chief of staff at the Registry of Motor Vehicles and acting chief of staff at the MBTA. She currently serves in Governor Deval Patrick's administration as chief of staff for the Department of

Telecommunications and Cable.

Her leadership inspired many

Polly Logan

CWPPP mourns the loss of Polly Logan, a great friend and supporter of the Center, described as "the quintessential mentor, a great unifier, problem solver and believer in the talents of women." The Polly Logan Fund honoring her legacy is based at the Center and supports scholarships for the Center's graduate students, public symposia and conferences, and research and publications. Logan, who passed away in September 2013, will be honored at a celebration of her life and legacy on April 8.

Resources now available

Sheneal Parker

First-of-their-kind resources to support women of color seeking public office are now available on the Center's website. The Pathways to Political Leadership for Women of Color project features contributions from five women community leaders, like Sheneal Parker. Developed by the Center in partnership with the Women's Pipeline for Change, the materials address many of the pressing issues affecting women of color in the public sphere: family and cultural expectations, financial resources and fundraising, personal and community values, and sources of support.

Graduate certificate program enabled career change

Patricia Hohl

Patricia Hohl, a 2013 graduate of the Center's graduate certificate program, has been appointed by the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center to oversee the national roll-out of its innovative Domestic Violence High Risk Team Model. A lawyer by training, the certificate program enabled Hohl to tackle pressing policy issues affecting women.

Book inspired many scholars and activists

The 25th anniversary of the groundbreaking book, Women and the Politics of Empowerment, by Center director Ann Bookman and her coauthor Sandra Morgen, was celebrated at the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association. The book was the subject of an invited session at the conference sponsored by the Association of Feminist Anthropologists and the Society for the Anthropology of North America.

Reflections from the first woman of color to run for Boston mayor

 Charlotte Golar Richie

The only woman in the Boston mayoral race this past fall - and the only woman of color - Charlotte Golar Richie faced unique challenges.  Speaking at a packed CWPPP public event, she shared lessons from the campaign trail and a panel of experts analyzed the election results from different vantage points.

Advancing policy in many fields

Rithika Kulathila

PWPPP alumnae are using experiences gained from the graduate certificate program to affect positive change: Erin Bradley ('06) is the new Executive Director of the Children's League of Massachusetts, Rithika Kulathila ('13) was recognized for her political activism, and Naomi D'Ottavio ('13) was appointed campaign manager of Dylan Hayre for State Senate.
