UMass Boston Honors Governor Deval L. Patrick
On June 4, more than 500 guests gathered at the Seaport World Trade Center to celebrate UMass Boston’s Golden Gala. The gala honored former Governor Deval Patrick, celebrated the 50th anniversary of the university, and launched UMass Boston’s new Just Imagine capital campaign.
Chancellor J. Keith Motley announced the founding of the new Deval L. Patrick Chair in Social, Political, and Economic Innovation, and that, to date, over $1 million has been raised in support of the chair.
The chair will be held by a nationally or internationally recognized scholar who will engage in cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and advance knowledge of how government, business, and nonprofit organizations can work together to create positive socioeconomic change, with a particular focus on reducing disparities and increasing equity.
President Robert Caret said that he was pleased that this chair links Deval L. Patrick to the University of Massachusetts Boston “for the rest of history.”
The former governor encouraged the crowd to keep fighting for young people in Massachusetts. “The business of opportunity is the business of America, and it is a worthy business,” he said.
