Yvonne Spicer '04: A Mayor of Firsts

On January 1, Framingham officially became the Commmonwealth’s newest city, and alumna Yvonne Spicer '04 was inaugurated as its first mayor.  Spicer is not only Framingham’s first mayor, but also the first black woman to be popularly elected mayor of any city in Massachusetts. 

Spicer received her doctorate in Educaation for UMass Boston in 2004. She spent decades in public education, including 16 years in Framingham. In 2007, Spicer became the Vice President for Advocacy and Educational Partnerships at the Museum of Science. Governor Deval Patrick appointed her to the inaugural Massachusetts STEM Advisory Council. She was reappointed by Governor Charlie Baker in 2017.
