Women Beacons in Business

The Women Beacons in Business Program offers career and personal development opportunities to our diverse body of students. Programs will educate both men and women about the importance of equality in the workplace and the steps they can take as future leaders to ensure fairness and equal opportunities for all. These programs provide the much-needed resources, connections, and skills to enable our students to reach their full potential and become informed leaders of tomorrow.

FEATURED PROGRAMS AND BENEFITS FOR STUDENTS:

• Book discussions consisting of a group of handpicked students and executives who will convene several times to discuss books relevant to women in business. The meetings will foster meaningful conversations, encourage participants to share experiences, discuss current events, and allow students to ask questions.

• Access to leadership workshops, conferences, and seminars.

A speaker series featuring experts presenting on important topics relevant to women in business. These events will be open to all students and alumni.

Round table discussions with a small group of students and a female executive. These sessions will take place in a more intimate setting, encouraging important discussion and allowing students to gain confidence, skills, and connections.

• Scholarships for future leaders in business who standout among their peers for their academic success and involvement in their community but who may not be able to afford college without financial support.

• Internships, fellowships, mentorships and networking opportunities.

Financial assistance for students in need to purchase supplies, books, or other necessities that will improve their academic success.

McKinsey & Company and LeanIn.org conduct annual research on women in the workplace. For 2019, here are some of their findings:

Women are less likely to be hired and promoted to manager: For every 100 men promoted and hired to manager, only 72 women are promoted and hired.

Men hold 62% of manager-level positions, while women hold just 38%. The number of women decreases at every subsequent level.

We can add 1 million more women to management in corporate America over the next five years if women are hired and promoted to manager at the same rates as men.

“Faculty, staff members, and I have seen that some of our female students may lack confidence and are not applying for challenging internships at the same rate as their male classmates. The confidence gap between males and females is not unique to our students; studies show that men will apply for a job if they have 60% of the skills required, while a female will only apply if they have 100% of the skills needed. The Women Beacons in Business program aims to break this cycle by helping students gain confidence, empowering them to go after opportunities, and introducing them to successful female role models that will inspire them.”

“I owe my career to female leaders who believed and mentored me over the years. If there is anything I can do to “pay it forward” to aspiring business leaders, I feel compelled to do so. I look forward to participating in this program.”
