When Chancellor Marcelo Suárez-Orozco and his wife, Carola, established the George Floyd Honorary Scholarship Fund in 2020, it was with the hopes of providing financial support to talented students who may otherwise find it difficult to pay for a college education. Our Chancellor, like our UMass Boston community, believes equitable access to quality education is foundational to dismantling oppressive systems in our country.

As Boston’s only public research university, our institution is deeply rooted in its mission to serve the public good of our city. We are committed to actively listening to our UMass Boston community members of color to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism on campus. The UMass Boston campus is majority-minority, and nearly 60 percent of our students are the first in their family to attend college. Many of our students must overcome challenges as a marginalized population in order to succeed in today’s society.

The George Floyd Honorary Scholarship Fund serves as a definitive step toward change by acknowledging and addressing the oppression faced by students, alumni, faculty, and staff. Join us in making an investment in our students, our future leaders, by contributing to this fund. Your gift will empower and enrich the lives of our students as they work toward achieving their college degree.
